Partly-printed DS, signed “S. Adams,” one page, 7.25 x 7, no date. As Governor of Massachusetts, Adams instructs State Treasurer Thomas Davis to pay "Hon. Nathan Cushing Esq'r one of the Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court the Sum of three hundred Seventy five Dollars in full for one quarter Salary ending the 1st of Oct. 1795." Signed neatly at the conclusion by Samuel Adams. Archivally cloth-matted and framed with a caption and an engraving to an overall size of 22 x 15.5. Includes a photocopy of the full document, which also contains the signatures of Davis and Secretary John Avery, both of which are matted out; the reverse contains Cushing's receipt autograph. In fine condition. Cushing (1742-1812) served as a Judge of Admiralty during the American Revolution at which time he was charged with preparing the seal for the state of Massachusetts. After the war, he served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts from 1789 to 1810 and as the State Councilor from 102 to 1807.
