Description

Darwin's friend mentors an up-and-coming botanist

Important British botanist and explorer (1817-1911) who was Charles Darwin's closest friend; he served as director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for 20 years. ALS signed “Jos. D. Hooker,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7.25, embossed Royal Gardens, Kew, letterhead, March 16, 1865. Handwritten letter to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, offering career advice. In part: "If any agreeable offer is made by the R. Hort. Soc. do not accept…untill a fortnight hence—as it is possible that another offer may be made from the other quarter…In either case, may I give you a hint—not to appear timid or hesitating in manner. You are well competent for any thing I have heard of; & do not be too modest." In fine condition, with one rough edge.
