Annotated on the reverse in another hand in pencil: "Print made in Time Life photo lab, 1994, V-J Day, Times Square, New York City, 1945 by Alfred Eisenstaedt." Captured by Alfred Eisenstaedt with his beloved Leica amidst the jubilant V-J Day celebration in Times Square on August 14, 1945, this famous image has come to symbolize American victory in World War II. It was first published in a 'Victory Celebrations' montage in Life Magazine a week later, captioned: 'In New York's Times Square a white-clad girl clutches her purse and skirt as an uninhibited sailor plants his lips squarely on hers.' The spontaneity of the scene led to the anonymity of the subjects—Eisenstaedt had no time to get their names and details. Although several men and women have claimed to be in the image, their identities have never been proven—resulting in one of the great mysteries in the history of American popular culture. Widely published and universally recognized, this is one of the enduring images of the 20th century.
