Description

Edie paints herself in 1965—an immensely rare self-portrait dating to her emergence as a Warhol superstar

Gorgeous original self-portrait painting by Edie Sedgwick, accomplished in mixed media on an 11 x 19.5 sheet of artist paper, signed in the lower left in pencil, “EMS, 65.” The painting shows Sedgwick, with her telltale pixie hairdo, in a partially nude three-quarter-length pose, her left arm placed between her chest, her face calm and contented, with portions of her body wrapped tastefully in a beige blanket. The sheet is affixed to a same-size backing, which is in turn mounted and matted to an overall size of 17.25 x 26.5. In fine condition, with some trivial spotting.

Sedgwick arrived in NYC in the summer of 1964 and, a year later, she was a star. She lived lavishly, feverishly, befriended Bob Dylan, and joined forces with Andy Warhol. She had become one of NYC’s most sought-after faces, appearing as ‘The Girl with the Black Tights’ in the November issue of Life magazine and being named as a ‘Youthquaker’ in the August issue of Vogue. A picture in the latter article shows Sedgwick balancing on a rhinoceros footrest, with the wall behind her featuring a large drawing of a horse, similar to many of the works offered in our collection.

Sedgwick’s preliminary model sketch for this painting is being offered as Lot 8034.
