Description

Roe v. Wade's author visits Minnesota: "I am a controversial character in some parts of the country, particularly in my home State"

TLS signed “Harry A. Blackmun,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, May 27, 1986. Letter to an administrator at Carleton College in Minnesota, who was to receive an honorary degree. In part: "This is a belated response to your letter of 16 April concerning Commencement at Carleton…You are aware, I think, that I am a controversial character in some parts of the country, particularly in my home State. My appearances are often picketed, and this is particularly likely if there is advance publicity. I do not wish to have this embarrass Carleton in any way or to spoil its Commencement. Because of this, United States Marshals usually accompany me from the airport to my destination, although this is not always the case. At the moment, I am not aware of their plans, but I will keep you advised." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Blackmun is best known as the author of the Supreme Court's opinion in Roe v. Wade, which led to the frequent protests of his public appearances.
