Conservative lawyer and judge (1862-1946) who served on the Supreme Court from 1914 to 1941; due to his bigotry and temperament, McReynolds is often included in lists of the worst Supreme Court justices. ALS signed “J. C. McReynolds,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 6 x 7.25, The Rochambeau letterhead, January 23. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, in part: "Yr. generous invitation is here, please accept assurance of my especial appreciation & permit me to thank you most sincerely. The fact is that I've been so little in any private house for so many years that I've lost the habit and feel much freer at a hotel…I am sure you will understand and feel sorry for me but not offended." In very good to fine condition, with moderate staining, especially to the second page.
