Description

Arctic explorer and physician (1832-1881) who served as ship's surgeon for the Second Grinnell Expedition in 1853-1855, led his own expedition in an attempt to reach the North Pole in 1860-61, and returned to command Satterlee Hospital in Philadelphia during the Civil War. ALS signed “I. I. Hayes,” one page, 5 x 8, June 15, 1869. Handwritten letter to a man in Boston, in part: "You will probably see it announced that I have gone to Greenland; but it is only for a summer jaunt, and I shall return in abundant time for the lectures—that is to say early in autumn." In fine condition, with some staining and minor surface loss to the left margin.
