Description

Well-traveled German botanist (1825-1871) who served as a naturalist on the HMS Herald's exploration of the American west coast and Pacific, catalogued the flora of the Fiji Islands, and edited the Journal of Botany, British and Foreign from 1863-1871. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, November 11, 1859. Handwritten letter to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, in part: "The news of your having become a candidate for the vacant chair of Botany at King's College seems to have been favourably received by that great body of our colleagues who justly regard you as one of the rising botanists of this country…Your various scientific papers have already won for yourself a well earned reputation, and inspired your fellow-labourers with a high regard for your talents as an astute observer of nature. They hope to see you taking a prominent part in extending the boundaries of science…I beg to recommend you as a fit person for the chair vacant by the death of our much commended Henfrey." In fine condition.
