Partly-printed DS, signed “A. E. Burnside,” one page, 14 x 8.5, May 6, 1867. As Governor, Captain-General, and Commander-in-Chief of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Ambrose Burnside appoints Pardon Hopkins as a lieutenant, "Having been duly elected to the office of Quarter Master, in the West Greenwich Cadets, Rhode Island Militia." Signed at the conclusion by Burnside, and countersigned by John Russell Bartlett as secretary of state. In very good to fine condition, with light staining and toning, primarily to the edges.
