American publisher and co-editor of EC Comics (1922-1992) who, following a shift in EC's direction in 1950, presided over what became an artistically influential and historically important line of mature-audience comics. He published the satirical magazine Mad for over 40 years. Questionnaire that William Gaines has filled out for an unpublished ‘Celebrity Yearbook,’ one page, 8.5 x 11, no date (circa late 1970s). Gaines fills out the questionnaire in blue ink and answers the following fields with his trademark humor: Name “William M. Gaines,” Date of Birth “3/1/22,” Nickname “Stud,” Favorite Song “Stamp Out Hate (from the Mad Show!),” Favorite Pastime “Zeppelin rides,” Favorite Expression “Jumping Butterballs!,” Greatest Hero “Alfred E. Neuman,” Greatest Dislike “‘Mad’ Magazine,” and Ambition “To publish ‘Screw’ Magazine.” In fine condition. A desirable format for the adored longtime publisher of Mad Magazine—Gaines remains scarce across all signed formats.
