TLS as governor of New York, one page, 8 x 10.5, personal State of New York, Executive Chamber letterhead, July 21, 1931. Letter to Washington Supreme Court Judge Walter B. Beals, in full: "That is a most interesting collection which you are making and I only hesitate to desecrate this fine old document with my modern signature. I have a fellow-feeling for your collecting for I too have been assembling old documents of many kinds for many years, especially those of the U.S. Navy. If you come to Albany at any time I hope you will stop off to see me." In fine condition, with light toning along the top edge.
Beals (1876-1960) was an accomplished private collector of manuscripts and books, who, from 1946 to 1947, served as the Presiding Judge at the International Military Tribunal I in Nuremberg, Germany. He took part in the ‘doctors' trial,’ the first of the 12 ‘Subsequent Nuremberg trials’ for war crimes of high-ranking German officials and industrialists; twenty of the twenty-three defendants were medical doctors who were accused of having been involved in Nazi human experimentation and mass murder under the guise of euthanasia.
