TLS signed “Joe,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal Circuit Court Chambers letterhead, May 13, 1946. Letter to Robert C. Bassett of the Hearst Newspapers, in part: “It was tremendously gratifying to get the results which we did at Oshkosh…things like that are not spontaneous…but the result of long and detailed work. Now that that part of the campaign (which, incidentally, I consider the most difficult) is ended, we can really start to go. I hope to be in Chicago around the 16th of June and shall attempt to contact you then.” In fine condition, with two file holes to the top edge. Although McCarthy served as Judge of the 10th Circuit Court of Wisconsin from 1940-47, he spent the bulk of this time fighting in World War II (1942-45) in the Pacific as an officer with the U.S. Marines. The letter refers to an important leg of his ultimately successful campaign for the U.S. Senate; he took his seat as a U.S. Senator eight months later on January 3, 1947.
