Early original sketch by Matt Groening of three of his Life in Hell rabbit characters, depicting Binky laying on the ground with a birthday cake resting on his stomach, with Sheba, his estranged girlfriend (whose appearance resembles that of Marge Simpson), and Bongo, his illegitimate son, looking on in surprise. The sketch is accomplished in ballpoint on the 12 x 12 inside front cover of Groening’s 1986 book Work Is Hell, signed along the bottom, “Matt Groening, 10/22/86,” who adds a speech bubble inscription above: “Happy birthday, Daryl!” Framed to a slightly larger size and in very good to fine condition, with light creasing, and some dampstaining to the right edge.
This delightfully early three-character sketch was drawn roughly six months before The Simpsons premiered on The Tracey Ullman Show (April 19, 1987), and three years before Springfield’s finest made their Fox network debut on December 17, 1989. A perfectly cromulent Groening display piece.
