Description

Founder and editor of the New York Tribune (1811-1872) who used the power of his newspaper to advocate for a variety of liberal causes, most importantly the call for emancipation of slaves during the Civil War. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, December 27, 1842. Addressed from the "Tribune Office," a handwritten letter to Nathaniel Fish, a Justice of the Peace from Westhaven, Vermont, in part: "I came back from a short visit to New Hampshire on Sunday morning…I am very confident that we have seen the worst, and that things will soon take a…turn in the country, as they have already done here. In the cities we have touched bottom, and are now coming up…But there is no mistake that things are tending to good. We are shipping large amounts of produce abroad and buying little in return; and, though prices are low on our side, they are equally low on the others. This must be our consolation under the low prices, which are certain to continue until we have seen improvement in the currency. While the banks remain so restricted as now, and we have no paper that will pass much further than you could throw it in a good breeze, all prices must be low." In very good to fine condition, with scattered light foxing and staining. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.
