Description

Bram Stoker does damage control for Henry Irving's Lyceum Theatre

ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Henry Irving's Fourth American Tour letterhead, November 15, 1897. Handwritten letter to journalist, playwright, and Broadway producer Harrison Grey Fiske, in part: "I am truly sorry to hear that some business has been made with regard to your paper, for Mr. Irving took himself the greatest care…I will ask about it tonight and write again. As to the ticket, I am quite at sea. Mr. Irving himself instructed Mr. Howson our treasurer to send them to you for both Friday night (the earliest date after he had made the arrangement) and for Sat. night. Mr. Howson told me that he had sent the seat, for I asked him lest there should be any mistake…This I shall also see to tonight." In fine condition.

Stoker worked as business manager for Henry Irving's world-famous Lyceum Theatre in London between 1879 and 1898, where he supplemented his income by writing a large number of sensational novels—his most famous being the vampire tale Dracula, published in 1897.
