Description

ALS signed “A. C[o]nan D[oyle],” one page, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, May 24, 1893. Handwritten letter regarding the rights to the comic opera Jane Annie, which he co-wrote with J. M. Barrie. In part: "It seemed to us that 10 days would be fair time after the performance during which you would be at liberty to make an offer for the Provincial and American rights in each case paying £100 down as an advance on a royalty of £2 for each performance." In good condition, with significant losses to edges (affecting much of the signature), tape reinforcements to reverse edges, a few stains, and a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top.

Jane Annie premiered at London's Savoy Theatre on May 13, 1893 and was an immediate failure there. Barrie and Conan Doyle made revisions, but the piece closed after a run of only 50 performances. It went on to a much more successful tour through England, with performances in Bradford, Newcastle, Manchester, and Birmingham.
