Description

Professor of chemistry and geology at Harvard Medical College (1793-1850), who was convicted of the murder of Boston businessman George Parkman and hanged. The case was highly publicized because of its gruesome nature—Parkman's dismembered and partially burned body was found in Webster's laboratory—and the high status of both individuals. The investigation became one of the earliest in which forensic evidence was used to identify a body. ANS signed “J. W. Webster,” one page, 5 x 5, no date. Handwritten note by Webster concerning a scientific publication, in full: "Will you be kind enough to send me the title of Dana's Mineralogy that I may quote him correctly—name at length & his titles." In fine condition.
