Large 72 x 50 ‘Oranje, Blanje, Blou’ fabric flag of South Africa, signed on the hoist in black felt tip, “N. Mandela, 24. 9. 91.” In fine condition, with some scattered staining to the fabric.
This flag was originally used by the Union of South Africa from 1928 to 1961 and later by the Republic of South Africa until 1994. Based on the Dutch Prince's Flag, it contained the flag of the United Kingdom, the flag of the Orange Free State, and the flag of the South African Republic in the center. It was replaced by the current flag of South Africa in 1994 with the commencement of the country's transitional constitution and the end of apartheid. A significant and uncommon signed format that shines a bright light on South Africa’s dark past.
