Scientist (1914-2006) for whom the Van Allen radiation belts were named following the 1958 Explorer 1 and Explorer 3 satellite missions. Two items: a matte-finish 7 x 5 portrait of Van Allen in front of a satellite dish, signed in black felt tip, "J. A. Van Allen"; and an FDC with a cachet honoring Nicolaus Copernicus, signed in black felt tip, "James A. Van Allen." In very fine condition.
