Attractive $1000 antique first mortgage sinking fund gold bond of the Penobscot Central Railway, issued December 2, 1901, 24.25 x 17, with 37 coupons intact on the right edge. Carrying a rate of 5%, the bond features a pair of great vignettes: a detailed trolley at the top, and a topless female allegorical figure (Liberty) on a large set of wings at the bottom, which is signed by Flavius O. Beal as president. In fine condition. With his gift for oratory and a penchant for publicity, Flavius O. Beal was one of Bangor, Maine’s best known personalities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Between 1892 and 1914, Beal served as Bangor's mayor, a span that covered seven terms.
