French-American writer, economist, publisher and government official (1739-1817) who, during the French Revolution, immigrated to the United States with his two sons and their families. His son Éleuthère Irénée du Pont was the founder of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. He was the patriarch and progenitor of one of the United States's most successful and wealthiest business dynasties of the 19th and 20th centuries. ALS in French, signed “du Pont de Nemours,” one page, 5 x 8, December 24, 1800. Handwritten letter to old Parisian friend Felix Faulcon, in part (translated): “You are entitled, my dear Faulcon, to many thanks…Your friendship will never do anything that will surprise me…Nevertheless, I would appreciate, dear friend, if…you would talk less about my advancing years and would not so often refer to me as that nice old gentleman. I turned sixty-one only a few days ago. I was not even sixty when I left. I was always blessed with an energetic and active nature. It is a prerequisite of my type of business. Others may think of me as being old and tired. I am not. This country’s dry climate and oxygenated air have even rejuvenated me to make me more interesting. But the well-placed trust that others have in my firm relies heavily on the fact that they believe me to be of clear mind and with a life expectancy of at least ten years. These are the tools of my trade. When God sees fit to bless me with them, let my friends not weaken the perception others have of them…You can be assured, dear friend, that I will bring prosperity to my associates because that is my duty.” In very good to fine condition, with much of the integral address leaf trimmed off.
