"As long as citizen involvement and participation is nurtured, I am optimistic about the final outcome of our current difficulties"

Pioneering lawyer, educator, and politician (1936-1996) who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Two items: TLS, one page, 8.25 x 11, Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs letterhead, November 5, 1985. Letter to an admirer reads, in part: "You can promote Americanism by being a good American. One person can make a difference. Our nation's strength has always been the willingness of people such as yourself to become involved in the search for solutions to our problems. As long as citizen involvement and participation is nurtured, I am optimistic about the final outcome of our current difficulties…Please find attached an autographed photo"; and an 8 x 10 pearl-finish photo of Jordan, signed in black ink. In fine condition, with rippling to the edges of the photo.
