Bavarian statesman (1759-1838) who, driven by the humanist principles of the Enlightenment, initiated economic reforms including a new system of taxation and the abolition of serfdom, instituted a humanitarian penal code, made education and military service compulsory, and launched a plan for national vaccination. Manuscript DS in German, signed "Monteglas," one page, 7.5 x 8, September 2, 1812. Untranslated document signed at the conclusion by Maximilian von Montgelas. The large embossed paper seal affixed to the left side remains intact, with a clipped corner. In very good condition, with partial splits to horizontal folds (repaired with old tape on the reverse), an area of toned adhesive below the signature, and chipping to trimmed edges.
