Medical officer in the US Navy (1820-1857) and a member of two Arctic expeditions to rescue the explorer Sir John Franklin. Though he did discover Franklin's first winter camp, he did not find out what had happened to the fatal expedition. ALS signed "E. K. Kane," one page, 6.5 x 8.5, November 13. Handwritten letter to artist James Hamilton, the illustrator of Kane's memoirs Arctic Explorations. In part: "Would you make for me in sketchy style, upon coarse toothed paper, any subject you please. I want it as a present to the lady of the Secretary of our Navy, and it may be that it will bring you into notice among the Smithsonian." Affixed to a same-size sheet and in very good to fine condition, with scattered staining from adhesive to reverse.
