Pioneering American chemist (1827-1894) whose work was instrumental in the measurement of atomic weights, foreshadowing the periodic law developed later by Mendeleev and others. ALS signed "Josiah P. Cooke," one page, 5.5 x 8.5, Chemical Laboratory of Harvard College letterhead, November 27, 1890. Handwritten letter to a young collector, in part: "I can not conceive how a boy in Allegheny Pa should even have heard of me; and much less why he should want my autograph. I think some kind spirit must have told him how much the old Harvard Professor likes young men and sympathizes with their noblest aspirations; and that his simple request would be met." In fine condition.
