Description

"The 'propertied' classes possess so unfair a share of power in the House of Commons"

British statesman (1811-1872) considered one of the greatest orators of his generation, remembered as a promoter of free trade, electoral reform, and religious freedom. Two letters on political matters: an ALS, one page both sides, 4.25 x 7.25, March 12, 1864, in part: "I have once spoken at great length in Liverpool on your question of Direct Taxation, & am indisposed to enter into an agitation that I think cannot succeed as long as the 'propertied' classes possess so unfair a share of power in the House of Commons"; and an ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, July 26, 1873, in part: "I was glad to read what you said lately about the Permission Bill. I am anxious that our friends are on the wrong path, & I thought it my duty to tell them so. If they are not wise in the course they take on the 'drink question,' they are not likely to be tolerant with those who differ from them." In overall very good to fine condition, with foxing to the top of the earlier letter, and two pieces of mounting tape on the edge.
