United States Army officer (1788-1860) known as the 'Father of the Modern Quartermaster Corps.' LS signed “Tho. S. Jesup,” one page, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, March 23, 1850. Addressed from the "Quarter Master General's Office," a letter to Captain Samuel Gibbs French, the Assistant Quartermaster in the general staff of the Army, in full: "I herewith enclose a letter of affidavit received from Captain Babbitt in relation to a deceased teamster named McKinney—upon examination of your reports & those of Captain Miller by whom he was transferred to you, it appears that M. McKinney was first hired on the 13th September 1848, by Captain Miller and reported by him until the 31st March 1849—when he was transferred to you as M. McKinney. You report him as M. McKinney until July 1849. On your report for hat month of August he is registered as 'Michael McKinney.' You are requested to report, if you know, whether the man was named 'Michael' or 'Miles,' and whether he was the son of Mrs. McKinney, who claims the pay due to the estate. Return the papers with your report." In fine condition.
