Description

ALS, one page, 4.25 x 6.5, personal monogrammed letterhead, June 19, 1888. Handwritten letter to "Governor Phineas," presumably Phineas C. Lounsbury, then governor of Connecticut, in full: "We shall have a magnificent time here 4th July. Mayor [Alfred] Fones says (& so do I) he would not miss having you ride in my carriage in procession to the Park for anything. I will have room for two of your friends (4 in all). You shall be made comfortable & happy every way, & I hope you won't fail to come." Matted and framed with an engraved plate and portrait (with facsimile signature) to an overall size of 18.5 x 11.5. In very good to fine condition, with separation along the central horizontal fold. A desirable and uncommon example given that Barnum, coincidentally, begins the letter by writing his first name.
