Description

Popular French soldier and politician (1770-1832) who commanded troops during the Napoleonic Wars, particularly noted for his capture of Capri from the British and for his defeat of Royalist forces in the Vendée in 1815. His death was the catalyst of the Parisian June Rebellion of 1832, which provided the background for events depicted in Victor Hugo's novel Les Misérables; Hugo portrays Lamarque as an emblem of French pride and honor. ALS in French, signed “M. Lamarque,” one page, 6.25 x 8, May 19, 1831. Untranslated handwritten letter to "Madam la Comtesse." In fine condition.
