English religious writer, philanthropist, poet, playwright, and abolitionist (1745-1833) in the circle of Johnson, Reynolds and Garrick, who wrote on moral and religious subjects. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.75 x 4.75, no date. Handwritten letter to a young friend, in part: "I am so delighted with your kind remembrance of me in your pretty letter that I must write a line to tell you how much I continue to love you. I have sent you a few little tracts of my own writing…I hope you continue [to be] fond of reading and that you will make a wise choice in your books on which your future character will…depend. You will therefore take the advice of the wise and the good…The Bible must have the preeminence of all other Books. History opens a vast field, to a youthful reader, but always inquire the character of the Author." In very good condition, with a few edge tears and a couple old repairs.
