American politician (1769-1828) who served as senator and who, as governor of New York, played a major role in the construction of the Erie Canal. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.25 x 9.75, March 17, 1821. As governor of New York, Clinton appoints Thomas Palmer Cornet to serve in "the 3rd Regiment of Cavalry of our said State." Signed at the conclusion by Governor Clinton and countersigned by Secretary John Van Ness Yates. In very good condition, with splits to vertical folds repaired with archival tape on the reverse, and some offsetting to the printed text.
