Description

French statesman (1729-1801) who served as Lieutenant General of Police of Paris during the reign of Louis XV and as Secretary of State for the Navy under King Louis XVI; his influence put the French in a position to aid the American patriots against the British at the close of the Revolutionary War. LS in French, signed “de Sartine,” one page, 8 x 12.25, March 14, 1776. Untranslated letter from Versailles, concerning an account given to the king. In fine condition, with scattered foxing.
