Member of the fabled Astor family of businessmen and financiers (1822-1890). The wealthiest family member of his generation, he served in the army during the Civil War (reaching the rank of brevet brigadier general) and later focused his business interests primarily on the acquisition and management of Manhattan real estate. ALS signed "J. J. Astor," one page both sides, 5 x 8, August 15, 1883. Handwritten letter to E. Y. Townsend of Philadelphia. In part: "My brother, Mr. William Astor, is building a steam yacht, but is absent from the city…I will lose no time in sending him your letter…he will no doubt address you, but I am under the impression, that he is already provided with a captain." In fine condition.
