ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, 19 Warwick Crescent letterhead, July 6, 1885. Handwritten letter to Emma Pender, the second wife of Sir John Pender, a Scottish textile merchant, politician, and submarine communications cable pioneer. In part: "You are very good, and I shall be happy to go down to you on the 25th as you desire so kindly. I well remember the beauty of Foots Cray Place, although I only saw it in unfavorable weather some years ago." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope hand-addressed by Browning; the upper right corner has been excised. Foots Cray Place was a mansion built in the Palladian style in the 18th century, and was one of the most elegant houses in Britain. John Pender leased the estate from 1876 and for the next 20 years divided his time between there and his London home.
