Maine-born Union major general (1828-1914) who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his defense of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. Partly-printed DS, signed “Joshua L. Chamberlain,” one page, 10 x 15, January 19, 1870. As governor of Maine, Chamberlain names Simon B. Davis "to be one of our Trial Justices, within and for our County of York." Neatly signed in the upper left by Governor Chamberlain, and countersigned at the conclusion by Secretary of State Franklin M. Drew. The gold foil seal affixed to the upper left remains fully intact. Handsomely double-matted and framed with a portrait of the Civil War hero to an overall size of 24.5 x 21.5. In fine condition.
