Financier and philanthropist (1855-1937) who helped found the Gulf Oil Corporation; he also served as treasury secretary under Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. TLS signed "A. W. Mellon," one page, 8 x 10.25, Secretary of the Treasury letterhead, January 12, 1927. Letter to Herbert L. Fordham, in part: "I think that my two letters of December 6th and 13th sufficiently set forth the position of the Treasury. I shall indeed be glad to have the cooperation of the New York bar, and if you will suggest some plan whereby the information as to the character, reputation, and ability of applicants can be ascertained from some central source or from some committee or bar association, I shall be glad to have the Committee on Enrollment and Disbarment make their inquiries there." In fine condition, with slight brushing to the signature. Accompanied by Fordham's retained carbon copy of his letter to Mellon, questioning the Treasury Department's policy of "not permitting members of the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States and of the Courts of last resort in the various States to be enrolled in your Department."
