Real estate magnate (1792-1875) and son of John Jacob Astor. LS signed “Wm. B. Astor,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, August 6, 1856. Letter to noted New York banker Thomas W. Olcott, in part: "I am favoured with your letter of the 5th & beg to acknowledge with many thanks, the invitation to attend the meeting of the Scientific Association. The Dudley Observatory is no doubt…really a subject of great pride with you. An institution of a similar character has been spoken of as to be established here, although nothing definite has yet been done in relation to the matter—I feel much obliged by your kind & friendly suggestion in regard to the association of my name, with the Institution in the endowment of a professorship. At present I am about to commence an extension of the library founded by my father, which with other local calls, will prevent me from profiting by your suggestion." In fine condition.
