American businessman (1826-1878) who served as president of the Western Union Telegraph Company. Civil War-dated ALS signed “Will'm Orton,” two pages, 5 x 8, August 1, 1862. Handwritten letter from New York, addressed to Thomas Hillhouse, the Adjutant General of New York, in part: "My friend Mr. S. W. Wood calls upon you with a requisition for a gun of which he is owner & patenter, and I respectfully solicit for the application careful consideration. Altho, not a 'military' man I understand a gun pretty well, and have used this of Mr. Wood with great satisfaction. I believe it demonstrates satisfactorily, that a breach-loading can now be placed in the hands of the…soldier with entire safety—and his ability to injure his enemy increased ten fold." In fine condition, with some light stains to the first page.
