Description

Union general (1805-1871) in command of Fort Sumter who refused a formal demand for his surrender, leading to the bombardment of the fort and the start of the Civil War. Neat ink signature, "Robert Anderson, July 13/65,” on an off-white 3.25 x 1 slip. In fine condition, with creases to two corners. A sought-after autograph from a desirable date, signed just two months after the end of the Civil War. Accompanied by an unsigned carte-de-visite portrait of Anderson in uniform.
