Mathematician, historian of mathematics, and Marxian theoretician (1894-2000) who was persecuted during the McCarthy era; invoking the First and Fifth Amendments, he refused to answer any of the 200 questions put forward during his HUAC hearing. Two items: a glossy 10 x 8 Boston Globe photo of Struik, signed on the reverse in black ballpoint, "Dirk J. Struik, With appreciation for your interest, Nov. 16, 1984"; and an ALS signed "Dirk J. Struik," one page, 8.5 x 11, November 17, 1994, in part: "I find your letter with the photograph. I see no place on the front where I can sign it, so I have signed it on the back. I am very pleased with your interest. If you like to know more about my adventures in the day of the late Mr. McCarthy, take the Jan. 1993 of the periodical 'Monthly Review,' where I have given an account." In fine condition, with a small stain to the bottom of the letter.
