Description

American politician (1760-1833) who succeeded Alexander Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury under Washington and Adams, and went on to serve as governor of Connecticut. Partly-printed DS, signed "Oliv: Wolcott Jr.," one page, 7 x 4.5, November 13, 1788. State of Connecticut Comptroller's Office pay order issued to Treasurer John Lawrence, in part: "Pay Honble. Willi[am] Samuel Johnson Esqr. Fifteen Pounds out of the Taxes…[for] the Payment of the Civil List, and charge the State." Attractively mounted, matted, and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 20 x 16. In fine condition, with a circular cancellation hole at the center. William Samuel Johnson (1727-1819) served as a militia commander during the Revolutionary War and later signed the United States Constitution, represented Connecticut in the Senate, and was the third president of King's College (now Columbia University).
