American author and Unitarian clergyman (1822-1909) remembered for his short story 'The Man Without a Country.' Two items: a 4 x 6 mounted portrait of Hale, signed on the mount in ink, "Edward E. Hale"; and an ALS signed "Edw. E. Hale," one page both sides, 5 x 8.25, personal letterhead, August 11, 1894, in part: "You may not have forgotten this interesting Miss Brown, who wrote a letter, about people who do not go to church, which I printed in the Register. I have answered this letter, but it seems to me that you may be able to strengthen and comfort her, perhaps, if you like to write to her." Attractively matted and framed together to an overall size of 18.5 x 16.75. A photocopy of the signed side is contained within a sleeve on the reverse; the actual signed page is covered by the frame's backing. In fine condition.
