Member of the fabled Astor family of businessmen and financiers (1822-1890). The wealthiest family member of his generation, he served in the army during the Civil War (reaching the rank of brevet brigadier general) and later focused his business interests primarily on the acquisition and management of Manhattan real estate. ALS signed on behalf of his father, “Wm. B. Astor per J. J. Astor, Jr., atty,” one page, 4 x 6, March 22, 1867. Handwritten letter to the treasurer of the Morris & Essex Rail Road Co., in part: "I am in receipt of your letter of the 21st Inst., enclosing certificate of stock of your company for 166 shs and scrip for $30. being amount of my Dividends." In fine condition.
