Union general and onetime commander of the Army of the Potomac (1824-1881); the distinctive whiskers he sported gave rise to the word 'sideburns.' Partly-printed DS, signed “A. E. Burnside,” one page, 15 x 18.5, July 15, 1870. First mortgage bond of the United States Freehold Land & Emigration Company in the amount of $1000 payable at 7% in gold coin, signed on the reverse by Burnside as a trustee. The certificate features a fine vignette of an American bald eagle and retains 42 of its coupons below. In very good to fine condition, with archival repairs to the split central vertical fold. The United States Freehold Land and Emigration Company promoted emigration, particularly from the Netherlands and Germany, to the 500,000-acre Costilla Estate in the San Luis Valley, Colorado Territory.
