Description

Partly-printed DS, signed “W. H. Tilford" and "Jno. D. Archbold,” one page, 10.75 x 7.75, October 20, 1893. Stock certificate for 2942 shares in the Standard Oil Trust issued to the estate of Josiah Macy, Jr., signed in ink by Wesley H. Tilford as attorney in fact and John Dustin Archbold as secretary. In fine condition.

John Dustin Archbold (1848-1916) was one of the United States' earliest oil refiners; he became one of John D. Rockefeller's closest associates after his small company was bought out by Standard Oil, rising to vice president and effectively running the firm from 1896 until his death. Wesley Hunt Tilford (1850-1909) was a Standard Oil executive for over thirty years; his brother, Henry Morgan Tilford, founded Standard Oil of California (now known as Chevron) and is portrayed in the film There Will Be Blood.
