Rare and important $100 bond of the Western North Carolina Railroad Company issued March 1, 1870, 14.25 x 20.75, with 40 coupons intact below. First mortgage bond payable at a rate of 8%, signed on the front by the company's president, Samuel McDowell Tate, and secretary, and endorsed on the reverse by Henry Clews and one other trustee. In fine condition. Tate (1830-1897) was a North Carolina merchant, soldier, railroad official, and legislator. Clews (1834-1923) was a British-American financier and author who served as an economic consultant to President Ulysses Grant.
