German Lutheran missionary to the Far East (1803-1851), notable as one of the first Protestant missionaries in Bangkok, Thailand, and Korea, who served as second the Chinese Secretary of the British administration in Hong Kong; he was one of the first Protestant missionaries in China to wear Chinese clothing. ALS signed “Ch. Gutzlaff,” one page, 5.25 x 6, April 30. Handwritten letter, in full: "I have the pleasure of sending the 20 Dollars subscribed for Mrs. Lay, and beg you to sign this received." In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top.
