British statesman (1809-1898) who served as prime minister on four separate occasions between 1868 and 1894. ALS signed “W. Gladstone,” three pages, 4 x 6, April 27, 1891. Handwritten letter to Scottish author and poet George MacDonald, in part: "I am very sensible of the high honour you have done me in presenting me with a copy of your Poems. I have read one of the volumes and a portion of the other, and I find the contents quite worthy." He praises the depth of MacDonald's work, comments on the "Ancient Paganism" subject matter, and asks if he has studied the works of Bishop Butler. In fine condition.
