American politician and jurist (1783-1841) who remains the only individual to have served as Speaker of the House and as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court; his opinions created an enduring Jacksonian legacy on the Taney Court. ALS signed “P. P. Barbour,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, December 29, 1824. Handwritten letter of recommendation, in full: "I beg leave to recommend to your attention Francis C. Hall Esqr. formerly of Maryland, late of West Virginia. Mr. Hall is desirous of obtaining an appointment in the Marine Corps. Upon the authorship of gentlemen of standing who are well acquainted with him, I am perfectly satisfied, that he is eminently qualified for the office which he wishes, not only in theory but in practice; for Mr. Hall has both seen and rendered service in the Navy of the U. States." In fine condition, with light blocks of toning to borders.
