English social theorist (1802-1876) considered to be the first female sociologist, remembered for her writings on politics, religion, and society. ALS signed "H. Martineau," one page, 4.5 x 7, May 27, 1856. Handwritten letter concerning the liberal publication The Westminster Review, in part: "I take this scrap to tell you-what you may possibly know better than I do-that the specified amount is raised for 'Westminster.' A letter is expected from one more quarter by 10th. I may possibly be spared my own contribution of £50…Dr. C. kindly says today he is very anxious to spare me. But, at all events, the great thing is done, & the review liberated. Hoo-ray!" In fine condition.
